Windshield Repair

Chips and cracks in a car’s windshield aren’t just frustrating, they can be a safety hazard. If they block the driver’s clear view, then this is absolutely an issue. In addition, cracks and chips can very suddenly increase in size and even cause the windscreen to shatter completely.

Thankfully, most minor damage can be repaired, rather than requiring a full-on windshield replacement. The following looks at the options available if your ride sustains damage to its front window.

What kind of damage warrants a windshield repair?

Damage to a vehicle’s windshield is common. Stone chips are something that it’s impossible to avoid—every driver has experienced that sinking feeling in their belly when that tell-tale “plink” signals that a stony missile has hit the glass.

While we’ve probably all been guilty of ignoring a windshield chip, it’s not great practice. Any damage causes a weakness that will increase over time. A chip can soon become a crack, and this can then extend across the screen. Worst case scenarios see a chip suddenly cause the complete windshield to shatter.

Once we know this, it becomes obvious that any type of windshield damage should be repaired as soon as possible.

Replacement vs. windshield repair

Luckily, most windshield damage only requires a simple repair, rather than replacement. The following lists situations when a repair wouldn’t be suitable:

  • There are more than three chips in the windshield
  • A crack that extends more than six inches
  • A chip that’s in front of a camera or sensor
  • The windshield has shattered

How much does a windshield repair cost?

Windshield repairs are pretty reasonable. It’s done by injecting a resin under vacuum into the damage, curing it beneath UV light, and polishing it so that the area is barely visible to the naked eye.

Not only does this repair the damage, but it also protects the integrity of the windscreen and prevents the damage from weakening the whole structure. Most newer vehicles also have some kind of forward-facing camera as a safety feature. This will need to be recalibrated if a repair is carried out, making it essential that you only allow a qualified professional to carry out such work.

You should also beware of anyone who says they can repair a crack that's longer than 6 inches. While it might look okay to start with, the structure of the windshield has been damaged and the result is likely to be unsatisfactory.

Many vehicle insurance policies include a windshield repair and replacement clause. If you do need to have such work carried out, it’s worth checking your policy and allowing them to pay to save some of your hard-earned dollars.
