Be Prepared for an Auto Accident

None of us like to think about having an accident in our vehicle. However, should the worst happen, being prepared is key to dealing with the incident on scene and getting your vehicle repaired and back on the road.

The following discusses the contingency plan that every driver should have in place.

The 1,2,3 of Auto Accident Preparation

  • 1. Auto accident preparation begins at home
  • 2. What to do if the worst happens: when auto accident preparation comes into its own
  • 3. Before you leave the scene

1. Auto accident preparation begins at home

An auto accident can be as simple as an inconvenient prang to full-on devastation. While we hope that you will never experience the latter, many people have to cope with the annoyance of a small shunt or shock of a larger incident.

Whatever the level of accident, it’s important to have the correct paperwork and equipment in your vehicle so you can deal with what’s occurred. Essential items to carry in your car or van include:

  • A list of your auto insurance, vehicle registration, and emergency contacts
  • Be sure to always carry your driver’s license
  • Ensure you have an emergency red triangle in the trunk so you can place it well behind the vehicle to warn others should an accident occur
  • A first aid kit to patch up any smaller injuries

2. What to do if the worst happens: when auto accident preparation comes into its own

Even the smallest of bumps can leave you shaken up, so do try to take stock before you leap out of the car to take action. The only time this wouldn’t be the right course of action would be if there’s a risk to life by staying in the car.

The first thing to do after an accident is to make sure that everyone is alright. This includes the drivers of both (or multiple) vehicles, passengers, and any pedestrians or bystanders involved. Any injuries would warrant a call to 911.

Next, move everyone—and the vehicle/s, if possible—to the side of the road. Even if no one is hurt, if a vehicle is likely to be a hazard to other road users then you should alert local police via 911.

3. Before you leave the scene

If there are no injuries and you’re able to drive your car away, there are some things that you must do before you leave the scene of the accident.

Take photos of any damage to your vehicle and speak to the police to get a report filed. Be sure to record the incident number. You must exchange contact information with other parties involved and insurance details if possible. This will be essential information to pass to your own insurance company to make a claim.

In the event of a more serious incident where you might not be in a position to get all the above information,  the police will be your first port of call. They will ensure they get details of all parties involved and pass the details on so you can provide them to your insurance company.

After you’ve passed the details to your insurance company you should ask where you can get any repairs to your vehicle carried out. They’ll likely have approved providers in the area or, if you use another car shop/garage, want to see an estimate before they authorize any work.
