Synthetic oil is something that many car manufacturers recommend. But why is this so? What’s the difference between synthetic and regular oil? Why is it more expensive and, crucially, do the extra dollars equal better performance?
Read on to get the lowdown on synthetic oil and why those who own and drive the best cars on the road today shouldn’t settle for anything less…
Synthetic oil differs from traditional motor oil in that it’s undergone various complex chemical transformations. Regular motor oil—or mineral oil—is derived from refining crude petroleum. Various impurities are removed during the process. With synthetic oil, this process is far more advanced, using sophisticated methods to modify it for higher performance.
In short, synthetic oils contain fewer impurities than mineral motor oil and undergo far more chemical refinements.
Historically, synthetic oils were more commonly used in high-performance cars. However, advances in cars of all levels mean that it’s often recommended for even the most basic of engines. The reasons for this are many and there are many advantages of doing so:
There’s really only a single disadvantage, and that’s that synthetic oil costs more than mineral motor oil. However, all of the advantages offset this extra cost. In fact, even if you were only to consider the extended intervals achieved between oil changes, the slightly increased initial cost of the oil is already more than accounted for.
You might also see oils marketed as “semi-synthetic”. As the name suggests, these are a mix of mineral oil and synthetic oil. While there’s no official definition of what these should contain, they sit somewhere in between the two. The price will also reflect this, being a little more expensive than mineral oil but cheaper than fully synthetic.
Their performance also sits mid-way between them both and, for some, is a cost-effective option. It’s important to know that not all engines are suitable for every type of oil. If you’re at all unsure as to which will best suit your vehicle, you should seek professional assistance before topping up or carrying out an oil change.
