Driver Pain Points: Rough Engine Performance

Driver Pain Points: Rough Engine Performance

Whatever car you drive, having an engine that doesn’t perform to the peak of its ability is something that reduces the driving experience. For luxury or high-performance vehicle owners, in particular, an engine that doesn’t hit the high spots is particularly irksome.

We discuss some of the more common reasons why this might be and some of the underlying causes that can be easily (or not so easily) rectified.

What Causes Rough Engine Performance?

  • Common causes of a rough engine while idling
  • Common causes of a rough engine while accelerating

Common causes of a rough engine while idling

A rough engine whilst idling can be noticed by an inconsistent RPM count, strange noises, or a shaking sensation—or a combination of these.

Some of the most common reasons this happens include:

  • Dirty fuel injectors: This is caused when these precision injector angles and quantity of fuel they dispense become interrupted by dirt. In addition, this can also reduce fuel efficiency.
  • A leak in the engine vacuum: An engine has many connecting hoses that create the system. If there’s a leak anywhere this can cause a reduction in the vacuum needed for optimal performance and cause a rough engine.
  • Carburetor problems: In older vehicles, the carburetor can be a culprit, especially if you notice black smoke coming from the exhaust. This is often caused by carbon deposits that can be removed with the regular use of a carburetor cleaner.
  • Misfiring spark plugs: Caused by the plugs themselves or the spark plug wires, this means fuel is burned at an inconsistent rate. This is felt as stutters and judders as the engine runs.

Common causes of a rough engine while accelerating

The above-mentioned spark plug issues can also be a cause of a rough engine when accelerating. This might be especially apparent if the vehicle is fully loaded or going uphill.

Other causes might be:

  • A clogged exhaust manifold
  • Dirty air or fuel filter
  • Low compression within the engine
  • Sensor malfunction, including crankshaft sensor, oxygen sensor, camshaft position sensor
  • Malfunction of the fuel pump

Why Your Choice of Car Maintenance Provider can Reduce the Chances of Rough Engine Performance

  • Not all providers are made equal

Not all providers are made equal

Unless you’re truly adept in the mechanics of your marque of vehicle, the only way to ensure that your car runs at an optimal level is to have it regularly serviced by an expert. Today’s cars are highly sophisticated pieces of machinery, with every make having its nuances and quirks. Add in the fact that each manufacturer has its own dedicated software systems to aid diagnostics and maintenance and it becomes obvious that, today, no mechanic can truly say that they’re a subject matter expert on every make of vehicle.

That’s why it’s essential that car owners, especially for those with prestige or luxury vintage vehicles, select their service provider with care. Doing this is the only way to ensure that the car runs as expected every time you get behind the wheel.
