BMW Most Common Issues

The joy of owning and driving a BMW is something to behold. From the vibration of power that reacts to the slightest touch of the gas pedal to the superior handling and—of course—those oh-so-sexy curves, this is German engineering at its finest.

However… Much as we could wax lyrical for hours about this king of road vehicles, as with every superior masterpiece of technology, BMWs can suffer from issues. The following looks at some of the most common, how to rectify them, and, if possible, how to avoid them occurring in the first place.

The Foibles of Perfection: 4 BMW Common Issues (and how to fix them)

  • BMW common issues #1: oil leaks
  • BMW common issues #2: steering vibrations when braking
  • BMW common issues #3: malfunctioning fuel pump
  • BMW common issues #4: coolant system issues

BMW common issues #1: oil leaks

While oil leaks can be a pain, they’re generally easy to spot. While not all models of BMW are prone to them, some—and especially older vehicles—often have issues. Oil leaks show themselves in a variety of ways:

You can smell burning oil as you drive

There’s evidence of oil leaks beneath the car. This is seen as dark, almost black, spots on the ground where the vehicle’s been parked

Blue smoke coming from the exhaust

There are multiple reasons for an oil leak, but the most common cause in BMWs is a leaking oil filter gasket. Routine oil changes and regular servicing are key to preventing the problem from becoming severe. In the early stage, it’s an easy, non-expensive fix. But leave it to progress and the dollars will mount up to get it repaired.

BMW common issues #2: steering wheel vibrations when braking

This is sometimes an issue with the 3-Series and is associated with the thrush arm bushings. The problem tends to manifest at around the 75,000-mile mark and needs fairly instant attention. This is because it’s a critical element of the vehicle’s suspension. If you notice the steering wheel begin to shudder or shake when braking, you’ll need to get it checked by a BMW technician asap.

BMW common issues #3: malfunctioning fuel pump

Sadly, this is a far-too-common problem and is usually caused by faulty wire contacts. There was a mass recall of BMWs with high-pressure fuel pumps in 2016 to fix the problem. However, other BMW vehicles have also been affected.

If you notice signs, such as sputtering at speed or a loss of acceleration, head to a BMW-trained technician to get the problem diagnosed and sorted out once and for all.

BMW common issues #4: coolant system issues

BMW coolant systems tend to last anywhere between 80,000-200,000 miles. If you start to experience overheating or the system not cooling or heating as it should, then you might have a problem.

However, rather than wait until you notice a fault, regular maintenance as recommended for your model should prevent any issues.
